This is a Winchester Model 1892 Takedown in .32-20 Win. Carrying serial number 439872, this legendary lever action rifle is dated from 1908.
This Winchester was color case hardened by Turnbull Restoration in 1994. The metal finish has held up very well, showing only the slightest signs of age. Note that minor pits and scratching does show under the receiver’s case hardening, more so on the butt plate. Screws and loading gate were nitre blued, presumably at customer request.
The 24-1/4″ barrel and magazine tube finish appears to be original. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The sights appear to be original except for the rear elevator.
The rifle appears to have been re-stocked at some point by a 3rd party, where the forend appears to be original but with added finish. Note the use of wood filler toward the bottom end of the buttstock, and the poor fit to butt plate.
