Description
Presented for you today is a high condition example of a Waffenfabrik Mauser M1898 Sporting Rifle, serial number 6867, chambered in 8x57mm.
The previous owner provided an excellent description, as follows:
The rifle is a very early production Waffenfabrik Mauser M1898 Sporting Rifle dating to 1904 per the serial no. range in the Speed et al book on Mauser sporting rifles. The Mauser trademark is period-correct; all nos. match, including small parts and stock; the rifle is in excellent, complete and unaltered original condition. The stock and barrel contours are correct for early production sporters. The proof marks are the period-correct Crown B and Crown U. A mark underneath the barrel indicates groove size as 8.2mm which would be correct for the 8x57S cartridge for which specs had already been established in 1904 although military adoption did not take place until 1905; the bore and twist marks are correct for the cartridge. There is also what looks to be a Crown G mark; if so, it would indicate the rifle was probably made for export to Sweden, with whom Mauser had a large military contract at the time.
Includes Plano Gun Guard case.
