Description as provided by previous owner:
“Browning 16ga Grade IV Auto 5 Two Barrel Set A5 Belgium
Spectacular 16ga Grade IV Browning Auto 5 Two Barrel Set. The very limited production Grade IV Auto 5s represent the pinnacle of Fabrique Nationale Master Engraver’s art on John M. Browning’s famous automatic shotgun design. These top of the line models, referred to by FN as Grade VI Style F, are elaborately engraved in an intricate pattern of fine green and yellow gold inlays that extensively cover all surfaces of the blued receiver. The top, sides, bottom, grip straps and even the barrels are graced with delicate lines of gold that are complimented against FN’s classic Belgian blue/grey satin finish.
The serial number on this beautiful firearm dates to 1926 as does the 28″ solid rib full choke barrel and also evidenced by the Ogden, Utah address on the top rib. Both raised rib barrels are of course numbered to the receiver and are exactly matching in detail to include front sight beads fashioned in ivory and gold inlays forward of the extensions. The second barrel, also 28″ in length and choked improved cylinder, has a barrel legend that denotes manufacture and fitting to the gun in the period of 1930 to 1935. An interesting (and rarely observed on high grade A5s) feature of this particular Grade IV is the presence of the later style push button safety behind the trigger. The improved third variation safety was an update offered by the factory on earlier model A5s after the modification was introduced into production by FN in the early fifties.
Browning literature at the time described the Grade IV stocks as being of Finest Selected Circassian Walnut with Extra Choice Checkering. Consistent with all aspects of this magnificent set, the highly figured stock and forearm are in outstanding mint condition including even the period correct NOSHOC pad. The half century old but like new Tolex two barrel fitted case from Browning completes this are offering.”
