L.C. Smith shotguns, born from the vision of Lyman Cornelius Smith in the late 1800s, have earned a special place in the hearts of American hunters and collectors. These side-by-sides were known for their rugged beauty and dependability—a real favorite for anyone with a love of fine shotguns that could also take a beating in the field. The brand built a reputation on high standards, marrying function with form so well that L.C. Smith shotguns became synonymous with the American sporting life.

Their Field Grade model, introduced in 1912, quickly became the everyman’s shotgun. Affordable and sturdy, it was the kind of gun you’d pass down to the next generation after a lifetime of bird hunts and weekends at the range. With no-nonsense walnut stocks and Armor Steel barrels, the Field Grade was a working man’s gun but with just enough class to make folks proud to carry one. Though production eventually ended in the 1950s, these L.C. Smith shotguns are still prized today, standing as a testament to solid American craftsmanship and the timeless appeal of a well-made scattergun. Like all L.C. Smiths, this 20 gauge example from 1940 was a pleasure to restore.
